Ambulance Service congratulates Doctor who provides crucial care

Dr Peter Gordon, a volunteer emergency doctor from East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme (EMICS) has been recognised with an award in the New Year's Honour's list (1st January 2012).

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) Medical Director, Dr James Gray, said: "We are delighted to hear about this honour for one of our volunteer responders. Dr Gordon has been providing crucial care to the Northamptonshire community for over 30 years and this recognition is well deserved.

"We wish to express our continued thanks to Dr Gordon and all his East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme colleagues for the valuable work they do."

Dr Gordon is a retired General Practitioner from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. When on-call, day or night, he responds to emergency 999 calls as a volunteer emergency doctor to support EMAS.

In recognition of the bravery he and ten EMAS ambulance crews showed when responding to a Road Traffic Collision on the A14 in Northamptonshire in 2009, Dr Gordon was awarded an EMAS Chief Executive Commendation.

Richard Clayton, EMAS Assistant Director of Operations for Northamptonshire, Leicestershire & Rutland said: "Dr Gordon has demonstrated incredible dedication to pre hospital care over the years, responding as a pre hospital Doctor for Northamptonshire Ambulance Service, The Two Shires Ambulance Service and now the East Midlands Ambulance Service. Dr Gordon is very well respected by his colleagues in the Ambulance Service and I am delighted he has had his work acknowledged and has been awarded the MBE."

On hearing about the award, Dr Gordon said: "I am totally surprised but honoured to be awarded the MBE. I will need time to get used to it. Even after all this time I am pleased to be able to continue supporting the ambulance service in this way".

All doctors in EMICS are volunteers who attend emergency incidents at the request of and in support of staff from the EMAS. These doctors are all very experienced and fully trained in trauma work and are equipped to perform life saving interventions at the scene of an incident such as industrial or road traffic accident or rail crash. They carry with them a wide range of specialist equipment to deal with the serious trauma and other emergencies that might be encountered in their day to day emergency work.

Although all the doctors work for EMICS on a totally voluntary basis, the Scheme, which is a registered charity, urgently needs to raise funds to purchase more of the specialist equipment that the doctors carry so that more doctors can be recruited. A typical set of equipment for the doctors cost around £25,000. Anyone interested in sponsoring the team should telephone the Treasurer on 07736 711199 or visit www.emics.org.uk where there is a form to complete for sending Gift Aided Donations.
