999 event a success

'What do you do to help people' were some of the questions the children at Martins Wood Primary School in Stevenage recently asked locally based ambulance, nurses and fire crews.

The schools nursery had chosen the month of June as their 'People who help Us' theme. The emergency crews and nurses were invited along to show the children the equipment they carry and what they do to help people in their time of need. Communications manager, Gary Sanderson who arranged the visit said: "I was approached by one of the teachers, Miss Harris, who teaches my son Teddy, if it would be possible to pop along and meet the children."

During the morning, over 60 children were shown around the ambulance, met the fire-fighters from Stevenage station, and received first aid tips from two nurses from the Lister Hospital, A&E Sisters, Ruth Sanderson and Debbie Gadd.

Gary added: "It was a pleasure to make a visit to the school. It was a really successful morning. The children were all very excited about the whole event. They all had the opportunity to look inside the vehicles and have slings and dressings put on by the nurses. A big thank you to Lee Crake, crew commander at Stevenage fire station and to Ruth and Debbie from the Lister Hospital for making the day very special for the children."
