The UK’s only Professor of Clinical Traumatology, Sir Keith Porter, has been announced as a key note speaker, along with Richard Lyon, Professor of Pre-hospital Emergency Care at University of Surrey, for the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust’s (EHAAT) annual Aeromedical Conference – which takes place on Wednesday 8 June at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford.

The Trauma Epidemic: Adapting to the Latest Strain is a free event sponsored by Medical Aviation Services and Anglia Ruskin University. Ronan Fenton, EHAAT Medical Director, will chair the conference, designed to educate and inspire hundreds of healthcare professionals and students from across the UK.

Dr Ronan Fenton, said: “We are so proud to be hosting our 7th Aeromedical Conference. We are really looking forward to welcoming such an incredible line-up of speakers who are a testament to the quality of Pre-hospital Care provided in the UK today.”

Sir Keith, who has been at the forefront of developing world-class treatment for injured military servicemen and women over the past 10 years, will discuss ‘The Changing Face of Major Trauma’ to explain how major trauma challenges are moving away from the young patient in road traffic collisions to the elderly who are suffering serious trauma in simple falls.

Prof Lyon, whose presentation ‘Why We Do What We Do’ explores the evidence that supports pre-hospital therapies and the impact these can have on the patient, has an established research portfolio in pre-hospital resuscitation, trauma care and emergency medicine. He has won numerous international awards including the top research award from the European Resuscitation Council and was a lead doctor for the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.

Other speakers at the forefront of their profession, include: Lt Col Claire Park, Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at King’s College Hospital and in Pre-hospital Care with London Air Ambulance; Dr Ross Davenport, Clinical Academic Lecturer in Trauma Sciences, Queen Mary University of London and EHAAT HEMS team member; and Dr Emily McWhirter, Clinical Director of Kent, Sussex & Surrey Air Ambulance.

Simon Stevens, a former airlifted patient of EHAAT, will offer delegates a patient’s view of trauma care – relaying his experiences in 2010 when he was involved in a serious motorbike accident.

Simon said: “Herts Air Ambulance saved my life; if it was not for their fast response and intervention, it is certain that my two young sons would now be fatherless and my wife a widow.”

New for this year, the Conference Debate will engage audiences with the theme of ‘Where Does Pre-Hospital Care End?’

Laurie Phillipson, Clinical Manager at EHAAT and Conference Organiser said: “Our aim is to bring together the specialists and emergency service providers involved in the care of patients in the pre-hospital and critical care industry to create an atmosphere in which we can learn from each other and inspire clinicians of all specialties to strive towards greater patient care and safety. In addition, delegates can make the most of networking opportunities and browse a range of trade stands from the medical profession. A thank you to our sponsors, Medical Aviation Services and Anglia Ruskin University for their valued support.”
