Melton police station is the first police station in Leicestershire to have a public access defibrillator installed and available for community use.

Officers from Melton local policing unit together with the Community Heartbeat Trust have installed a defibrillator on the wall outside the police station and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help with life threatening cardiac emergencies.

The device has been paid for by Melton Mowbray Building Society who are a supporter of the Community Heartbeat Trust.

PCSO 6622 Bob Wood, who was one of the driving forces behind the initiative said; "I am very proud that we have been able to get the device installed, and very grateful to the Community Heartbeat Trust for their hard work. We have permission to install devices at all of the local policing units in the force and I hope we will be able to achieve that in the not too distant future."

Martin Fagan, Secretary of the Community Heartbeat Trust said; "We are delighted to be working with Leicestershire Police in the provision of defibrillators for community use at all their sites in the county. Having access to a defibrillator saves lives in Cardiac Arrest and the more we get available for the public to use, the more lives will be saved. Melton is the first station to be supported in this way and we are very grateful to the Melton Mowbray Building Society for their support in funding this opportunity".

An automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that diagnoses and assists with tackling life threatening cardiac emergencies. They are simple to use and each device has easy to follow instructions that allow the device to be used without training.

All defibrillators need to be registered with the local ambulance service. To access the device any member of the public should dial 999 - ambulance. They will be given instructions of where their nearest defibrillator is located and the access code for the cabinet. After use the defibrillator needs to be returned to the cabinet.
