NWAS Nominated for three National Emergency Planning Awards

Thursday, 24 June, 2010

The Emergency Preparedness Team of the North West Ambulance Service was nominated for three national awards for their five-year Emergency Preparedness Strategy which was approved in 2008 in addition to their excellent contribution towards civil protection.

The Strategy was reviewed in March 2010 and updated to ensure it remains robust to address, deliver and achieve its aim and objectives around civil contingency duties. As the largest NHS Ambulance Service in England it has a key role to undertake, in local, regional and national civil protection as NWAS serves five Local Resilience Forums, one Regional Resilience Forum and several national partnerships.

The Strategy sets out a clear direction and pathway for the organisation, as a Category One Responder Agency as defined by the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 (CCA), including the education and development of its own workforce in terms of emergency preparedness (EP) and for its integration with multi agency partners, on a local, regional and national basis.

The Trust and its EP Team were shortlisted for the Emergency Planning Society 2010 Awards, which are the national industry awards, involving multi agency partners and organisations from across the United Kingdom. Against very strong competition, The Trust was recognised and shortlisted for the awards of 'The City of London Award for Resilience Team of the Year', 'The Local Resilience Forum/Strategic Coordinating Group National Policy Award' and 'The Health Protection Agency Award for Emergency Planning Initiative of the Year'.

Paul Kudray, the Trust's Assistant Director of Emergency Preparedness, who along with members of the EP Team, attended the ceremony on 22 June 2010 at The SECC venue in Glasgow, said "Unfortunately the Team didn't win on the night, but they will continue to learn, develop and grow to ensure the delivery of high quality emergency preparedness to the people and patients of the North West. I am very proud of the whole Team's continuous achievements and to be nominated for such prestigious awards is a credit to them."
