Commendation for Staffordshire men

Tuesday, 29 April, 2008

Two men who stopped on their way home from work to help a young driver whose car had gone off the road have been commended for their actions by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

Andy Tebbs and Andy Gibson were on their way home from work when a light coming from inside a hedge on the side of the road caught their eye.

Andy Tebbs said, "I saw what looked like a cycle light in the hedge. We turned round and went back to investigate and found a young woman, trapped in a car which had flipped onto its side.

"She had gone through the hedge and had been there about 25 minutes as the car was not visible from the road. Her head was poking through the sunroof and I thought she was dead. Luckily she wasn't and we stayed with her and comforted her."

A paramedic on her way to work also stopped to help at the scene, and fire and police were called to help free the 20-year-old woman from the car.

Mr Tebbs said, "As the car headlights were shining on the girl, we stayed at the scene while they freed her so they could use the light from my car as it was pitch black. I was really really impressed with the team work between all the services to free her and treat her.

I've never seen anything like it."
Presenting them with Trust Commendation certificates Peter Murtagh, Locality Director, Staffordshire, said undoubtedly their actions in stopping at the scene and supporting the woman, had made a difference to the outcome of the case.
